ENG is a test of balance system function that requires one to two hours to complete. Certain medications may affect the test results. To prevent this from happening, please do not take any of the following medications for 12 hours prior to the time of your exam:

  • Alcoholic beverages.
  • Sleeping pills.
  • Tranquilizers/Anti-depressants.
  • Anti-dizzy pills
  • Anti-nausea pills.
  • Over-the-counter cold or allergy medications.
  • Caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate).
  • Cigarettes or other tobacco-based product.

    You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, etc.).

    DO NOT STOP medication for endocrine (thyroid, hormonal) disorders, blood sugar disorders (diabetes/low blood sugar), heart/blood pressure disorders or seizure disorders. If you are in any doubt, or are taking a medication not listed, please check with your physician before you stop the medication.

    Dress comfortably, as you will be lying on an exam table. Women may prefer to wear slacks.

    If you wear contact lenses please bring glasses to wear during the test.

    Eye makeup and mascara should not be worn

    Some forms of vertigo can be treated at the test appointment. Sometimes follow-up appointments are required to complete treatment.

    Please make arrangements to have someone AVAILABLE who can be contacted to drive your home should this be required.
